Synology Diskstation DS416j NAS Review

Synology Diskstation DS416j NAS Review

While not as high-end as the DS716+ and the DS1515+ that we previously reviewed, at a price of under $300 dollars for a quad-bay NAS, the DS416j is a bargain. What you do get is a very reliable four-bay NAS that supports up to 8TB drives with a maximum volume size of 16TB. That is a lot of storage space for any user and will have you pumping out data and media like no tomorrow. Originally, at release, there was no Plex support, but a recent check unveiled that support has been added, so you now have options for streaming media to other boxes. As for the speeds, the RAID 10 was the overall best performer as imagined and works well with the four bays during testing with the four Seagate 8TB NAS drives. This gives you the best space and performance ratio that you could want in a NAS. There are some missing features such as the web browser and some of the HA/Fail Over items. There is also no SSD caching, which I feel would have improved speeds on the DS416j overall. All in all though, this is a very good entry level NAS for those wanting to get into the market and have a dedicated low power NAS unit. If you are looking for a no frills backup and storage solution and do not want to pay a lot of money with four bays and a 16TB max volume, the DS416j is a very nice unit. While using a lower-end CPU and 512MB of RAM, it did perform quite well considering, and would be a great solution for first time and budget conscious users… at OverclockersClub
