Zoom iQ5 Mid-side Condenser Microphone Unveiled

iQ5 is the world’s first Mid-Side stereo microphone for iOS devices

Zoom North America has announced the immediate availability of the iQ5 mid-side condenser microphone for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

The iQ5 attaches to the iOS device Lightning connector and provides two microphone elements in a mid-side configuration. Mid-side (MS) recording is an advanced technique that allows the capture of crystal clear stereo audio which is fully mono compatible. Affordable yet loaded with advanced features, the iQ5 can be used in either portrait or landscape mode, with a unique rotating mechanism that ensures correct left-right stereo orientation. It offers 16-bit/44.1kHz recording and provides an analog-type Mic Gain wheel for precision adjustment of input level, along with three Auto Gain presets, built-in limiting, an automatic recording function, and a dedicated headphone jack.

The iQ5 works with any iPhone (5 or later), iPod Touch (5th generation or later), iPad (4th generation or later) or iPad mini running iOS 6.0 or newer. It can be used in conjunction with most iOS apps that support audio input from an external microphone, including Camera, GarageBand and many popular video streaming apps, as well as Zoom’s free Handy Recorder app, which allows the width of the soundstage to be altered in post-production, as well as adding editing capabilities and effects such as compression, EQ and reverb. Handy Recorder also enables uploads to SoundCloud, allowing the iQ5 user to instantly share their recordings online.
